Assisted living facilities manage a large number of medications, making them a perfect environment for an automated dispensing machine.automatic dispensing machine An ADM can free up staff time that can be better spent on other tasks, as well as enhance patient safety and improve efficiency in care delivery.

An ADC (also called an UBC or ADM) is a computerized cabinet that stores and dispenses medications in healthcare settings. It can be found in hospitals, pharmacies and now assisted living facilities as well.

It consists of a computer, storage bins or drawers for drugs and a barcode scanner and printer. The system allows nurses to select a patient, and then the machine dispenses medications based on the doctor’s order.

Nurses can also use the ADC to return unadministered medications. Once the nurse logs in to the system, they select the patient whose medication was unadministered and click on the return button. The system will then list the previously dispensed drugs for this patient and on-screen and visual guiding lights will point to the correct bin or drawer.
