How Effective Is An Ultrasonic Cleaner?
The ability to clean machined metal parts to an extremely high level of purity has made ultrasonic cleaning equipment a cornerstone for industries that rely on precise, consistent manufacturing.refrigeration ultrasonic cleaner The technology combines high-frequency sound waves with agitation of a liquid to blast away residues from intricate surfaces, tight corners and crevices.
Unlike traditional methods that require scrubbing with toxic, caustic chemicals, ultrasonic cleaners are fast, automated and require minimal human interaction.refrigeration ultrasonic cleaner They are used in jewelry workshops, watchmakers' establishments and scientific laboratories to name just a few. They are also common in car and aircraft engine factories, electronic repair shops and dental and medical practices.
An ultrasonic cleaner consists of a stainless steel tank with piezo-ceramic transducers bonded to the bottom (Figure 6.refrigeration ultrasonic cleaner 10A) or side and coupled to an ultrasonic generator. The generator produces ultrasonic waves that create alternating pressure zones in the cleaning solution, which in turn cause microscopic bubbles to form and violently collapse. These bubbles scrub the surface of the parts in a process called cavitation, which dislodges contaminates and dissolves them into the liquid.
When the generator's ultrasonic wave power is adjusted, its mechanical vibration causes the liquid in the tank to vibrate as well.refrigeration ultrasonic cleaner As the liquid vibrates, it creates an electric field that reaches across the entire surface of the tank, driving the alternating pressure zones into action.
The resulting cavitation action blasts the surfaces of parts to remove a wide range of contaminants, including dirt, oils, rust, scale, and other deposits.refrigeration ultrasonic cleaner The cleaning action can be enhanced by heating the solution. This makes the solution more effective for degreasing and dissolving some materials, such as blood, tissue, and waxy coatings.
Other factors can affect how effective an ultrasonic cleaner is. For example, the type of cleaning solution used is important because different materials respond to it in different ways. The temperature of the solution is also important because elevated temperatures can harden protein in blood and damage delicate printed circuit boards. A filtration system is often necessary to reduce the amount of residual particles in the cleaning solution.
Another factor is the frequency of the ultrasonic wave. Most commercially available systems operate at a single frequency, but higher-frequency units are also available to boost performance in specific applications.
Lastly, the system should be equipped with safety features to protect the operator and the contents. This includes personal protective equipment (PPE), which should be worn when handling dangerous solutions and a safety shutoff that protects against overheating and long cleaning cycles that can cause the solution to evaporate below recommended levels.
A timer and a programmable cycle setting are also essential safety features. The timer prevents the system from running unattended, and the cycle setting allows the operator to set a particular duration for the cleaning cycle. The programmable setting can help ensure that all parts receive the same amount of exposure to the ultrasonic wave, and it minimizes the risk that a part will be damaged by overexposure.
